There's this amazing teaching by Thich Nhat Hanh - which is really a meditation practice - which involves looking at a tree. He says to notice that you can see the entire universe in a tree.

Because without the sun, there is no tree. Without clouds, and therefore, rain, there is no tree. Without the minerals in the ground there is no tree.

What I love most about this teaching is how we can turn it into a meditation for anything, including our fellow human beings. We are all interconnected. This is how things are. We cannot remove any single cause or condition and still have a tree. A tree is made up of everything but a tree.

Send me an email if you'd like a print of this piece.
