With this piece I was exploring teachings by both Elizabeth Mattis-Namgyel and Pema Chodron. They both talk about the experience of being totally open to what life presents for us - not shying away from it.

In Elizabeth's teachings she refers to the practice of bearing witness. This is a practice of showing up for the moment, regardless of how uncomfortable it might be, how not-pretty it looks. It's also a practice of showing up, genuinely, for the parts we enjoy. Not clinging or grasping by trying to capture and concretize a pleasant experience with photographs or video but to actually just sit and notice and be with it. Like the setting sun or the brightness of a full moon or the joy of seeing someone we love again after a long separation.

In Pema's teachings she assures us, again and again, that we ARE big enough for our life. We are big enough for the difficulties and challenges. We can hold it all - but only when we let go of the need to fix, or control or have things turn out in a way that meets our expectations.

Send me an email if you'd like a print of this piece.
