I've spent a significant chunk of time contemplating change. Embracing the inevitability of change intrinsic to a life well lived and involves letting go of expectations, hope and notions of fate.
I appreciate that this may sound rather negative but actually, it opens everything up. Expectations limit ideas about ourselves and others. Hope traps us in these limiting expectations. Fate leads us to believe that things have meaning outside of the meaning we give them.
In our attempt to gain ground and seek comfort we actually trap ourselves. We don't allow for the fluidity, flexibility and vastness of life. Life is, as Elizabeth Mattis-Namgyel says, rambunctious. The world does not owe us anything. It is going to do as it does.
I chose traditional Manushri symbolism for this piece - specifically the sword of Manjushri. The sword cuts through what we think we know. It cuts through self-deception, ignorance and naïveté. It invites us to see things as they are, free of the stories we tell ourselves. Free of limitations.
