I was first introduced to Dakinis in a talk by Ani Pema Chodron, in which she describes a visualisation she does when she's feeling anxious. She describes herself as a wrathful Dakini, a practice I've adopted and find immensely beneficial.
When I get stuck on my personal suffering, when I'm feeling sorry for myself or wallowing, I visualise a wrathful Dakini stepping on my back, pulling me out of my small ego-clinging mindset so I'm able to see how everyone suffers. Everyone is susceptible to pain and loss and depression. I remind myself that when I work to benefit others, I always feel better, but when I try only to get rid of my own pain I always, always feel worse.
Suffering is a human condition. This piece acts as a reminder that no matter what uncomfortable feeling arises for me, I am not alone. We are not and never were and never will be the only person ever to feel how we feel. Our suffering is an opportunity for us to learn how to relate better with others, to show up for others, by learning to show up for ourselves with honesty and compassion.
